Inti Raymi, the Festival of the Sun, was the most important celebration of the Inca Empire. It marked the winter solstice and the beginning of a new year, honoring Inti, the sun god. Today, it is re-enacted every year on 24 June in Cusco and attracts visitors from all over the world.
What happens on the day
The celebration takes place at three locations:
- Qoricancha, the Temple of the Sun, where the Inca greets the sun in the morning.
- Plaza de Armas, where the procession meets the city authorities.
- Saqsayhuaman, the fortress above the city, where the main ceremony takes place in the afternoon, with hundreds of performers in traditional costume.
The ceremonies at Qoricancha and in the Plaza de Armas can be watched for free. Seats in the stands at Saqsayhuaman require a ticket; you can also watch from the surrounding hills.
The whole month of June is festive
June is Cusco's month of celebrations, with parades, music and dance almost every day, as well as Corpus Christi. The atmosphere is unique – but hotels, flights and Inca Trail permits are in very high demand.
Tips
- Book early: Hotels, tickets and treks for late June sell out months ahead.
- Arrive early at each location to get a good spot.
- Bring sun protection and warm layers – June days are sunny, but mornings and evenings are cold.
- Combine it with a trek or a tour of the Sacred Valley before or after the festival.
