Planting native trees with the community of Quelcanca

In 2018, Incatrekkers launched a reforestation project in the Andean communities, including Quelcanca, where many of our porters come from.

The project focused on planting native tree species that fit into the existing ecosystem and are vital for its long-term health.

One of the most moving aspects was the active involvement of local children – a hands-on lesson in caring for the environment, both for the children and for the travelers who joined in.

Planting trees together also created a deeper connection with the Andean communities. We learned about their traditions and their profound understanding of the land they call home – and how closely restoring ecosystems is linked to preserving cultural heritage.

The project shows how responsible tourism can make a positive difference: as travelers, we can be not just observers but active stewards of the places we love.
