Classic Inca Trail: history at every step

The Inca Trail follows an original Inca road. Along the way you pass more than a dozen archaeological sites – Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarka and the terraces of Wiñay Wayna – and on the last morning you walk through the Sun Gate to your first view of Machu Picchu. It is the classic choice for anyone interested in Inca history, but permits are limited and must be booked months ahead.

Salkantay Trek: high mountains and wild nature

The Salkantay Trek is a high-altitude adventure. It starts near the turquoise Humantay Lake, crosses the Salkantay pass below the glaciers of Mount Salkantay (6,271 m / 20,574 ft) and descends into the cloud forest and coffee farms of the jungle edge. Fewer hikers, more varied landscapes – and no permit needed, so it can be booked at short notice.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose the Inca Trail if history and the Sun Gate are your priority and you can book early.
  • Choose the Salkantay Trek if you love mountain scenery, want a bigger physical challenge or your dates are sold out.
  • Can't decide? Our Inca Trail and Salkantay Trek combines both in six days.
