The Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu is renowned as one of Peru's most iconic treks, offering a captivating journey through diverse ecological zones and abundant vegetation. Along this trek, you will encounter a stunning species of flora, including orchids, towering trees, and a variety of plants such as bananas, coffee, papayas, and coca plants. The fauna is equally impressive, with a multitude of insect, reptile, bird, and mammal species that inhabit the region.

The trail itself presents a thrilling adventure, as it traverses high mountain passes reaching elevations of 4600 meters (15,091 feet). As you ascend, you will be treated to awe-inspiring panoramic views of majestic mountains, including the prominent Salkantay mountain, standing at an impressive 6271 meters (20,574 feet), which is part of the Vilcabamba mountain range. As you continue your trek, you will immerse yourself in the enchanting atmosphere of cloud forests, characterized by misty surroundings and lush greenery. Finally, on the last day of the journey, you will emerge into the subtropical vegetation, ultimately arriving at the magnificent site of Machu Picchu.


ITINERARY:

Day 1: Cusco - Soraypampa - Humantay Lake - Salkantaypampa

We will begin our adventure with a pick-up time from your hotel at 5:00 am. Our private transport will take us on a scenic journey through charming villages such as Anta, Ancahuasi, and Limatambo. The drive, which lasts approximately 2 hours, will provide us with picturesque views along the way. We will make a brief stop in Mollepata (2800 m / 9,186 ft) for about 30 minutes to enjoy a delicious breakfast and purchase any last-minute snacks and drinks.

Continuing our journey, we will embark on a one-hour drive to Soraypampa (3900 m / 12,795 ft), which is the starting point for our trek. From Soraypampa, we will embark on a captivating 1 1/2 hour hike uphill, traversing the slopes until we reach the enchanting Lake Humantay (4200 m / 13,779 ft). This stunning lake is fed by the majestic hanging glaciers of Humantay Mountain (5480 m / 17,979 ft). We will take our time to appreciate the awe-inspiring views of the lake and the surrounding mountains before retracing our steps back to Soraypampa, where we will have a satisfying lunch.

After lunch, we will continue our hike for approximately 2 hours, reaching Salkantaypampa (4200 m / 13,779 ft), our first campsite.

Day 2: Salkantaypampa - Salkantay Pass - Collpapampa

We will embark on our journey early in the morning following a delicious breakfast. Leaving our campsite behind, we will make our way towards the terminal moraine, which marks the beginning of the trail's ascent to Soyrococha (4400 m / 14,435 ft). As we ascend, we will be greeted by a breathtaking mountain landscape and expansive grassy plains. The journey to Soyrococha will take approximately one hour, providing ample time to immerse ourselves in the magnificent surroundings.

From Soyrococha, our path will lead us to the highest point of this trek, Salkantay (4600 m / 15,091 ft). Upon reaching the pass, we will stop to take in the awe-inspiring views of the snow-capped peaks of the Vilcabamba mountain range, stretched out in every direction. The glaciated south face of Salkantay will stand prominently before us, showcasing its majestic beauty.

The trail will then wind its way through the landscape, guiding us downhill to Wayraqmachay (3919 m / 12,857 ft), where a well-deserved lunch awaits. After replenishing our energy, we will continue our hike, enjoying an easy three-hour descent through stunning vegetation. The lush surroundings will captivate our senses as we make our way to our second campsite, Collpapampa (2950m / 9,678 ft), where we will spend the night.

Day 3: Collpapampa - Playa Sahuyacu - Lucmabamba

After a refreshing night's sleep, we rise early in the morning to savor a nourishing breakfast. Eager to continue our expedition, we embark on an invigorating hike along the Santa Teresa River, relishing in the increasingly vibrant and verdant vegetation that surrounds us. Along the way, we encounter enchanting waterfalls, flourishing passion fruit plants, and captivating plantations of bananas, avocados, and coffee.

As we navigate our path, we have the opportunity to admire the majestic waterfalls before arriving at Winaypoqo, a picturesque spot where we will take a well-deserved rest and enjoy a delightful snack. The journey to reach Winaypoqo will span approximately 3 hours, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Continuing our trek, we set forth for another 3 hours, heading towards La Playa Sahuayacu (2050m / 6,725 ft) and ultimately reaching our third campsite, Lucmabamba (2060m / 6,758 ft). Along this portion of the trail, we are greeted by the exuberant local flora and fauna, showcasing the rich biodiversity of the region. The vibrant colors and melodious sounds of nature accompany us on our journey, providing a truly immersive experience.

Day 4: Lucmabamba - llapta Pata - Hidroelectrica - Aguas Calientes

We begin the day with an ascent of approximately 2-3 hours, leading us to El Mirador or Abra Qelloqasa (2860m / 9,383 ft). This vantage point offers us unparalleled views of Machu Picchu from the southeast, granting us a captivating perspective of this iconic wonder.

After absorbing the breathtaking views, we proceed to Llapta Pata, an archaeological site that holds historical connections to both Machu Picchu and Sayacmarka. Ample time is allocated to explore and immerse ourselves in the rich Inca heritage found within this remarkable site.

Next, we embark on a descent lasting about 2 hours, guiding us through lush bamboo forests, vibrant orchards, and fragrant coffee plantations. As we make our way towards the Ahobamba River, we are surrounded by the natural beauty that envelops us. Upon reaching the Hidroelectrica, we gather for a well-deserved lunch, replenishing our energy for the journey ahead.

Following our meal, we begin on a pleasant 3-hour walk, leading us to the charming town of Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival, we check into our hotel, providing us with an opportunity to freshen up with a rejuvenating shower. As the evening sets in, we gather together to enjoy a delightful dinner at a local restaurant, savoring the flavors of the region.

Day 5: Machu Picchu to Cusco

We begin the day by waking up early in the morning and enjoying a hearty breakfast at our hotel. To make the most of our visit to Machu Picchu, we take one of the first buses available. This early start is well worth the effort, as it allows us to experience the tranquil ambiance of the Inca City during the quiet early morning hours. We have the opportunity to capture stunning photos and witness the magical sunrise over Machu Picchu.

Following our arrival at Machu Picchu, our knowledgeable guide will lead us on a comprehensive tour of the site. We will delve into the history and significance of Machu Picchu, exploring its remarkable buildings and temples. This guided tour provides invaluable insights into the ancient Inca civilization and their architectural achievements.

Our tour of Machu Picchu typically concludes around 10:00 am. It's important to note that starting in 2021, the Peruvian government has implemented new regulations that divide the entrance times into specific slots throughout the day. Our tour is scheduled between 6:00 am and 10:00 am. (Circuit 1 or 2) If you wish to embark on any additional hikes within Machu Picchu, such as Wayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, you will need to purchase an extra ticket.

Once you have thoroughly explored every corner of Machu Picchu, we will take a bus back down to Aguas Calientes for a well-deserved lunch. Before departing Machu Picchu, make sure to familiarize yourself with the time and location of the meeting point in Aguas Calientes, where you will receive your train tickets for the return journey to Cusco. We will then board a train to Ollantaytambo, and from there, our private transportation will transport us to our hotel in Cusco.

    Bus and Train Tickets: In Aguas Calientes, we provide a bus ride to Machu Picchu and a return bus ride. Afterward, board a train from Aguas Calientes to the Ollantaytambo train station, followed by a private van transfer back to your hotel in Cusco.

    Horsemen and Horses: Dedicated horsemen and horses transport tents, food, cooking equipment, and your personal belongings, ensuring a more comfortable trek. An emergency horse is available if needed.

    Camping Equipment: Enjoy spacious four-person tents, inflatable sleeping pads, a dining tent, and a well-equipped cooking tent.

    Exclusions

      Travel Insurance: For the safety of your trip, comprehensive travel insurance is highly recommended.

      Meals: The first-day breakfast in Mollepata and the last lunch in Aguas Calientes are not included.

      Sleeping Bag: If needed, a sleeping bag can be rented for an additional fee of $25.

      Trekking Poles: Rent trekking poles for $15 to improve stability and reduce physical stress during the hike.

      Tips and Extra Spending: Tipping is optional but appreciated for exceptional service. Personal expenses during the trek are not included.

      Wayna Picchu Ticket: Enhance your Machu Picchu experience by climbing Wayna Picchu with an additional ticket cost of USD 75 per person.

        In order to give your body the opportunity to get used to the altitude before the hike, we strongly advise coming at least two days before the tour. Most people can usually acclimate to Cusco (3400m/11,154 ft) in a full day of leisurely walking and heavy drinking of water.

        What to bring

          Ensure you are well-prepared for your trekking adventure with the following essential items:

          Daypack: Make sure you have a suitable backpack for your daypack needs.

          Passport: Remember to bring your original passport for mandatory identification purposes.

          Student Card: If you qualify for a student discount, don't forget your International Student Identity Card (ISIC).

          First Aid Kit: Pack a personal first-aid kit containing any necessary medications.

          Sleeping Bag: If you don't own a sleeping bag, you can rent one from us for $25.

          Rain Gear: Be ready for rain with gear such as a jacket and pants. Alternatively, you can purchase a rain poncho in Cusco.

          Hiking Boots: Opt for sturdy footwear, preferably walking boots with ankle support. Consider bringing sandals or jogging shoes for added comfort at the campsite.

          Clothing: Include a complete change of clothing, along with a sweater, fleece jacket or shirt, beanie, hat, and gloves for cooler nights. Thermal clothing is recommended, especially for sleeping.

          Water Bottle: Carry metal or Nalgene-type water bottles to stay hydrated.

          Flashlight: Don't forget a reliable flashlight or headlamp with spare batteries.

          Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun's rays. Pack after-sun or hydrating cream for your face and body.

          Hats: Bring a hat or cap to shield yourself from the sun, rain, and cold.

          Insect Repellent: Ward off bugs with insect repellent.

          Snacks: Consider bringing dried fruit, biscuits, chocolate, and energy bars for specific snack preferences not included in our meal services.

          Toilet Paper: Remember to bring toilet paper and handkerchiefs for convenience.

          Camera: Capture the journey with a camera, extra films, and batteries. Note that batteries may deplete more quickly in cold conditions.

          Extra Money: Carry some additional Peruvian soles for purchasing drinks or emergencies.

          Hiking Poles: While optional, walking poles can be beneficial. If using poles with metal spikes on the Inca Trail, bring rubber protection for them.

          Towel: Include a small towel for various purposes, and if you plan on bathing in the hot springs, pack a swimsuit.
