Founder's Story

My name is Juvenal Iturriaga, and I want to share my story with you. I was born in the Yanahuara community in Urubamba, where I spent my early years alongside my parents, cultivating our own food such as corn, potatoes, and vegetables. Growing up in this close-knit community, I was immersed in our mother language, Quechua, and gradually learned Spanish during my elementary school years.

To further my education, I made the decision to leave my community and venture alone to the larger town of Urubamba for high school. Financial constraints made it challenging for my parents to support my studies, so I took it upon myself to sustain my education. For about two years, I worked as a porter on the classic Inca Trail, while receiving a modest wage in return.

However, I knew that being a porter was not the path I wanted to pursue for the rest of my life. Driven by a passion for tourism and a desire to become a tour guide, I relocated to Cusco to continue my studies. In Peru, becoming a tour guide requires dedicated study of tourism and English. I persevered through various jobs, working hard to finance my basic needs and education. After five years of unwavering dedication, I realized my dream and became a Peruvian tour guide.

Since 2004, I've worked as a tour guide for numerous companies, constantly learning from the tourists I've had the pleasure of guiding, as well as from the local staff, including chefs, porters, and colleagues, who have joined me on the trails. I have hiked the classic Inca Trail and explored many other remote trails in the highland communities where our porters come from.

These journeys along the rugged trails have reiterated the harshness of life in the Peruvian mountains. It became apparent to me that many tour companies were owned and operated by foreigners, resulting in a significant amount of income leaving the country without benefiting the local people or contributing to the country's development. It was at this point that I made the decision to establish my own company, driven by a vision to support and uplift my people in the future. This purpose guides me relentlessly. I carry the memories of my humble roots close to my heart and am committed to making a positive difference in their lives.

Today, through Incatrekkers, I aim to offer authentic, responsible, and immersive travel experiences that not only showcase the breathtaking beauty of Peru's landscapes but also contribute to the well-being and empowerment of the local communities we encounter. With profound respect for the Andean culture and a commitment to sustainable tourism practices, I strive to create opportunities for economic growth, cultural preservation, and environmental
