The Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu is renowned as one of Peru's most iconic treks, offering a captivating journey through diverse ecological zones and abundant vegetation. Along this trek, you will encounter a stunning species of flora, including orchids, towering trees, and a variety of plants such as bananas, coffee, papayas, and coca plants. The fauna is equally impressive, with a multitude of insect, reptile, bird, and mammal species that inhabit the region.

The trail itself presents a thrilling adventure, as it traverses high mountain passes reaching elevations of 4600 meters (15,091 feet). As you ascend, you will be treated to awe-inspiring panoramic views of majestic mountains, including the prominent Salkantay mountain standing at an impressive 6271 meters (20,574 feet), which is part of the Vilcabamba mountain range. As you continue your trek, you will immerse yourself in the enchanting atmosphere of cloud forests, characterized by misty surroundings and lush greenery. Finally, on the last day of the journey, you will emerge into the subtropical vegetation, ultimately arriving at the magnificent site of Machu Picchu.


ITINERARY:

Day 1: Cusco - Mollepata - Soraypampa - Wayraqmachay

Your day begins with a convenient hotel pickup at 5:00 am, and our journey commences with a pleasant 2-hour drive in our private transport to Mollepata (2800 m / 9,186 ft). Along the way, you'll have the opportunity to witness the charm of several local villages, including Anta, Ancawasi, and Limatambo. Once we arrive in Mollepata, you can enjoy a satisfying breakfast and purchase any last-minute snacks and drinks before we continue.

After another hour of driving in our private transport, we will reach Soraypampa (3900 m / 12,795 ft), which is our starting point for our trek. During this portion of the journey, keep an eye out for the majestic Humantay Mountain (5480 m / 17,979 ft), a sight that will leave you in awe. From Soraypampa, our adventure truly begins, as we embark on a 3-hour trek through a breathtaking mountain landscape and vast grassy plains until we reach Soyrococha (4400 m / 14,435 ft), situated near the impressive Salkantay Glacier (6271 m / 20,574 ft). Here, a well-deserved lunch awaits us, providing nourishment and a chance to rest before we continue our ascent to the Salkantay Pass (4600 m / 15,091 ft), the highest point of our trek.

Upon reaching the pass, we pause to soak in the awe-inspiring views that surround us. In every direction, you'll witness the snow-capped peaks of the Vilcabamba mountain range, with the glaciated south face of Salkantay towering above. As we begin our descent, the trail winds its way through the landscape, leading us to our first overnight stop at Wayraqmachay (3919 m / 12,857 ft).

Day 2: Wayraqmachay - Playa Sahuayacu

After a restful night's sleep, we rise early in the morning and have breakfast before beginning our downhill hike. Our path leads us through various camp sites, including Rayanniyoc and Andenes, as we gradually descend towards Collpapampa (2950 m / 9,678 ft). Upon reaching Collpapampa, we take a well-deserved break for lunch, refueling our bodies for the remainder of the journey.

The next leg of our trek treats us to a leisurely walk alongside the picturesque Santa Teresa River. As we traverse this enchanting landscape, the vegetation becomes increasingly lush, revealing the wonders of the region. Along the way, we encounter delightful waterfalls, and the air is filled with the fragrant scents of passion fruit, bananas, avocados, and coffee plantations. We pass by the mesmerizing waterfalls and continue until we arrive at our second campsite, La Playa (2050 m / 6,725 ft). La Playa is a charming small village equipped with basic facilities, providing a cozy resting place for the night. Throughout this leg of the journey, be prepared to encounter the vibrant local flora and fauna that add a touch of wonder to our trekking experience.

Day 3: Playa Sahuyacu-Lacta Pata-Hidroelectrica - Aguas Calientes

We begin this day with an ascent approximately 2-3 hours, leading us to El Mirador or Abra Qelloqasa (2860 m / 9,383 ft). From this vantage point, we are treated to exceptional panoramic views of Machu Picchu from the southeast, allowing us to admire its magnificence from a unique perspective. As we soak in the awe-inspiring sights, we prepare ourselves for the next phase of our adventure.

Our journey continues as we make our way to Llactapata, a captivating archaeological site that holds historical connections to both Machu Picchu and Sayacmarka. This beautifully preserved Inca site invites exploration, and we are given ample time to delve into its secrets and immerse ourselves in its ancient atmosphere. After enjoying our time at Llactapata, we begin our descent, which lasts approximately 2 hours, taking us through lush bamboo forests, enchanting orchards, and vibrant coffee plantations. Our path eventually leads us to the Ahobamba River, where we cross its gentle currents.

Arriving at the Hidroelectrica, we stop for a well-deserved lunch. Energized and refueled, we embark on a pleasant 3-hour walk that brings us to the town of Aguas Calientes. Upon reaching Aguas Calientes, we settle into our hotel for the night. After checking in, we have the opportunity to freshen up with a refreshing shower. Later in the evening, we gather together and venture out for a delightful dinner at a local restaurant, savoring the flavors of the region.

Day 4: Machu Picchu to Cusco

We begin our day by rising early and enjoying a delicious breakfast at our hotel. To make the most of our visit to Machu Picchu, we catch one of the first buses available. The early morning journey is well worth it, as Machu Picchu is at its quietest during this time, allowing us to relish in the serene atmosphere and witness the enchanting sunrise over the ancient city. With ample time to take photographs and soak in the breathtaking views, we embark on a guided tour of Machu Picchu, where we delve into its intriguing history and explore its most significant buildings and temples.

Our guided tour of Machu Picchu concludes around 9:30 am. It's important to note that since 2021, new rules have been implemented by the Peruvian government, which have divided the entrance times into multiple slots throughout the day. Our tour falls within the time frame of 6:00 am to 10:00 am. If you wish to embark on additional hikes within Machu Picchu, such as Wayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, you will need to purchase an extra ticket.

Once you feel satisfied that you have explored every corner of Machu Picchu, we board a bus that will transport us back down to Aguas Calientes, where we will enjoy a well-deserved lunch. Before departing from Machu Picchu, it is essential to ensure that you know the time and location of the meeting point in Aguas Calientes, where you will receive your train tickets for the return journey to Cusco. From Aguas Calientes, we will take a scenic train ride to Ollantaytambo, where our private transportation awaits to transfer us back to your hotel in Cusco.

What's included?

    Pre-Departure Briefing: Two days prior to your departure, take advantage of a trek briefing at your hotel, when your guide will give you your duffel bag and crucial information. Keep in mind that your pack shouldn't weigh more than 6 kg (13 lb). You can hike with just a modest daypack holding necessary items like rain gear, a warm fleece, a water bottle, and a camera because your duffel bag will be carried by horses.

    Transportation: We will arrange private van transportation from Cusco to the starting point of the trek in Soraypampa. In Aguas Calientes, we will provide a bus ride to Machu Picchu and a return bus ride from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes. Afterward, we will board a train from Aguas Calientes to the Ollantaytambo train station, where a private van will be waiting to transfer us back to your hotel in Cusco.

    Accommodation: On day 4, we arrange a comfortable hotel in Aguas Calientes for your stay. The accommodation is based on two people sharing one room, but upgrades to single rooms are available upon request.

    Meals: Throughout the trek, we will provide you with three breakfasts, three lunches, and three dinners. Our meals include a variety of options such as pancakes, omelets, soups, fresh fruits, chicken, fish, meat, rice, pasta, and hot drinks, including the traditional coca leaf tea, known for its effectiveness against altitude sickness. Additionally, we offer a tea time every afternoon with a selection of tea, coffee, biscuits, and popcorn. You will also have access to warm water in the mornings and afternoons for personal hygiene. We are able to accommodate vegetarian meals and special dietary requirements; please inform us in advance or during the briefing on the evening before the trek.

    Professional Guide: Our trek is led by a professional bilingual guide who is fluent in English and Spanish. For groups exceeding eight people, we provide two guides to ensure personalized attention and a high level of service.

    Horsemen and Horses: To ease the burden of carrying heavy equipment, we have dedicated horsemen and horses who will transport the tents, food, cooking equipment, and your personal belongings, such as a mattress, sleeping bag, and clothing. Each person is allowed a maximum weight of eight kilograms (including the sleeping bag). Additionally, we have an emergency horse available in case someone requires assistance and is unable to continue walking.

    Camping Equipment: During the trek, you will be provided with spacious four-person tents, allowing two people to share a tent. The tents are Eureka Timberline SQ 4XT, designed to accommodate your backpacks comfortably. Each person will also have an inflatable sleeping pad (Therma Rest) for added comfort. We will set up a dining tent for meals and provide a well-equipped cooking tent. A first aid kit, including an emergency oxygen bottle, will be available for any necessary medical attention.

    Entrance Fees: The entrance fees to Machu Picchu are included in our package, ensuring seamless access to the historical site.

    Additional Amenities: We will supply warm water every morning and afternoon for personal hygiene. Additionally, we offer filtered boiled water from the second day onward for your convenience. To prioritize sustainability, we provide bio-degradable hand soaps to minimize our environmental impact.

    We strive to ensure your comfort, safety, and enjoyment throughout the trek, providing well-maintained equipment, knowledgeable guides, and delicious meals tailored to your dietary needs.

      Travel Insurance: We strongly recommend securing comprehensive travel insurance to safeguard your journey.

      Breakfast: Your first breakfast at Mollepata on the initial day of your trek. On the final day, post-Machu Picchu exploration, lunch at Aguas Calientes

      Sleeping Bag: For an extra level of comfort during your trekking adventure, we offer the option to rent a sleeping bag for a reasonable fee of $25.

      Trekking Poles: To enhance your stability and alleviate strain on your body during the trek, we offer the option to rent trekking poles for $15.

      Tips and Expenses: It is customary to express your appreciation for the excellent service provided by our guides and support staff through gratuities. The amount is at your discretion, but we recommend budgeting for this purpose. Additionally, we suggest allocating a portion of your budget for any personal expenses that might arise during the trek, such as souvenirs or snacks along the way.

      Wayna Picchu Tickets: If you wish to elevate your Machu Picchu experience by climbing Wayna Picchu, you can select this option during the booking process. Please note that there is an additional cost of $75 per person for the Wayna Picchu ticket, offering you the unique opportunity to explore this iconic peak and savor panoramic views of Machu Picchu from an extraordinary vantage point.

          Backpack for your daypack: A sturdy backpack to carry your daily essentials and personal items during the trek

          Original passport (mandatory): A valid passport is required for entry to Machu Picchu.

          International Student Identity Card (ISIC): If you are eligible for a student discount, remember to carry your ISIC for verification.

          Personal first-aid kit and necessary medications: It is recommended to carry a basic first-aid kit and any prescribed medications you may require during the trek

          Sleeping bag: You have the option to rent a sleeping bag from us for $25, ensuring a comfortable rest during the nights.

          Rain gear or poncho: Be prepared for inclement weather with a waterproof jacket and pants or a rain poncho. Plastic ponchos can be purchased in Cusco if needed.

          Strong footwear: Choose sturdy walking boots with ankle support for a comfortable and safe trekking experience. Additionally, pack sandals or jogging shoes for added comfort at the campsite.

          Change of clothing: Pack a complete change of clothes, including a sweater, fleece or jacket, beanie, hat, and gloves for cooler nights. Thermal clothing is recommended, especially for sleeping.

          Water bottles: Carry reusable water bottles, preferably metal or Nalgene-type, to stay hydrated throughout the trek.

          Flashlight/headlamp and batteries: Essential for navigating in low-light conditions, make sure to pack a reliable flashlight or headlamp along with spare batteries.

          Sunscreen and after-sun cream: Protect your skin from the sun's rays with sunscreen, and consider carrying after-sun cream or hydrating lotion for face and body care.

          Hat or cap: Shield yourself from the sun, rain, and cold by wearing a hat or cap during the trek.

          Insect repellent: Keep insects at bay by packing insect repellent to ensure a comfortable experience.

          Snacks: While we provide a comprehensive meal service, you may want to carry additional snacks such as dried fruit, biscuits, chocolate, or energy bars for personalized preferences.

          Toilet paper and handkerchiefs: Carry toilet paper and handkerchiefs for personal hygiene purposes along the trekking route.

          Camera and extra batteries: Capture the breathtaking moments along the trek by bringing a camera, extra film, and batteries. Note that batteries may deplete faster under cold conditions.

          Emergency funds: It is recommended to carry some extra Peruvian soles for purchasing drinks and emergencies that may arise during the trek.

          Walking poles (optional): If you prefer using walking poles, bring them along. Ensure metal spikes have rubber protection if intending to use them on the Inca Trail.

          Small towel: Carry a compact towel for personal use during the trek.

          Swimsuit: If you wish to enjoy the hot springs along the route, pack a swimsuit for a relaxing dip.
